We opened Chaplin House B & B in February 2004, just six months after moving to the rural village of Martin in Lincolnshire. Since then, we have converted a dilapidated barn and outbuildings to provide stylish, spacious and award-winning guest accommodation in a peaceful location. We enjoy welcoming guests from all over the world and making them feel special. Our aim is run our business in an environmentally sustainable way: this is reflected in the way we source our food and all aspects of energy and water use.
Come and stay to explore Lincolnshire’s wonderful countryside and fascinating history.
The history of Chaplin House goes back over 200 years. It was built in 1797 as an alehouse and until 2003 was still called Chaplin Arms. It played an important part in the life of the village: in the past, the first floor at the front of the house was one large room in which parish meetings and other public gatherings were held. The building was last used as a public house in 1923. It then became the village post office and a shop until the early sixties when it began to fall into disrepair. Since 1982 various owners have gradually rescued the building, and in the last four years we have converted the barn and some of the outbuildings for guests.
The lounge still retains the beautiful original cast iron range, made in Lincoln by C Duckering. Although it is no longer used for cooking, the fire in the range is lit on winter evenings and it is easy to imagine life as it was lived here until the middle of the last century.
